Alegria Vineyard

Since 2002 Lost Canyon Winery has been excited about the Syrah wine coming from the Alegria Vineyard located in the Russian River Valley appellation, near the town of Healdsburg in Sonoma County.

The name Alegría means joy. Alegria Vineyard has a long and storied history, producing superlative wine grapes for more than a century. The Alegria Vineyard was first cultivated as early as the 1850’s. The current owners Bill and Betsy Nachbaur purchased the vineyard in 1990. They immediately began reviving the Zinfandel field-blend vineyard established in the 1890's. They planted 18 acres of new vines including Zinfandel, Syrah, Cabernet Franc, Sangiovese, Dolcetto, Petite Sirah, Alicante Bouschet, and several lesser-known varieties. The Syrah was planted in 1991 using primarily the Lakeview Selection Syrah clone. The vineyard uses the Geneva Double Curtain trellis system with 6’ by 11” spacing.

In ancient times the meandering Russian River formed the vineyard’s rolling landscape and deposited the gravelly clay-loam soils that nourish the vines. Characteristic of the Russian River appellation, Fog and cool breezes from the Pacific Ocean provide cool nights and foggy mornings that provide long growing season ideal for premium quality grapes. Alegria was specifically selected by Lost Canyon for this quality and our desire to offer cool weather Syrahs. The particular climate, soil, and topography of Alegria Vineyards combine to produce award-winning wines with luscious fruit, complexity, and balance. The wine is deep violet in color with notes of blackberry, earth, smoke, leather, and spice. The wine is loaded with soft tannins that add structure and a fine finish to this wonderful cool weather Syrah.
